JK Arts Foundation’s Annual Art Competition held at Sun Shine Public School

On 10 th May, 2023, JK Arts Foundation organized an art competition at the Sun Shine Public School, Jammu as a part of its Annual Art Competition. The theme for this year’s Annual Art Competition is Lifestyle for Environment or LiFE which is a goal of India’s ongoing G20 Presidency. The concept of LiFE- introduced by the Indian Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi at the COP26 Conference and formally inaugurated jointly by him and the UN Secretary-General Antonio Gutteres in Gujarat in October, 2022- aims at instilling sustainable lifestyle principles among the general population. Considered as a part of the global ‘Green Transition’ and conceived at a time when climate, energy and food crises have assumed worldwide proportions, LiFE’s objective is to revolutionize the movement for environmental sustainability by making fundamental positive changes at the grassroots level.

The competition was held at the Sun Shine Public School, Miran Saheb, R S Pura, Jammu. Sun Shine Public School focuses on employing scientific methods to impart quality education on students from all backgrounds irrespective of gender, caste or creed. The school is committed to spread education in the far-flung rural areas of Jammu and Kashmir and is sensitive to the necessity of uplifting the conditions of the Scheduled Castes, other backward classes and economically weaker sections of society. Jammu, the city the school is located in, is the second most populous city of the Union Territory of J&K. Situated at the bank of the river Tawi, Jammu city is surrounded by the Shivalik and the Trikuta mountain ranges and is based on uneven ridges. It is known as the ‘city of temples’ due to it being the abode of numerous elaborate temples. An attractive tourist destination, Jammu is nevertheless an important administrative center and is known as the ‘winter capital’ of Jammu and Kashmir. R S Pura in particular is famed for the cultivation and processing of high-quality basmati rice.

More than thirty students from the Sun Shine Public School participated in this exciting and educational competition. All of them were given free art kits. JKAF members explained to the participants the theme of the Foundation’s Annual Art Competition and its significance on a global scale. Then, they assisted the students in creating artworks in keeping with the Lifestyle for Environment theme. Finally, the students were encouraged in an interactive session to speak about their individual works of art in an effort to help them learn to confidently express themselves.

In the end, the art competition held at Sun Shine Public School was a resounding success. The students who participated in the competition greatly enjoyed the experience and learned to express themselves through art while gaining awareness about the importance of an environmentally sustainable daily lifestyle. The teaching faculty of Sun Shine Public School also found the competition to be helpful for their pupils. The Principal of the institution, R K Sharma, was reported to state, “We hope that more of these art workshops are conducted to instill habits in children for adopting sustainable lifestyle for the future.”
